When you think of the Beatles, apart from ‘Let It Be’, you don’t really think to make a comparison with their music to Christianity. Maybe every other ‘religion’, but certainly not Christianity! I love the musicianship of ‘Let It Be’, and will always sing along – but I always thought the lyrics to be quite disingenuous.
However, ‘The Long And Winding Road’ is a beautiful, touching, and tearful ballad – not only musically, but lyrically as well.
It reminds me of a Psalm of David.
David, who even the Lord called ‘someone after My own heart’ (Samuel 13:14, Acts 13:22), had his trials in life. He knew that his eternity was secure in His hands, but his Psalms are full of lamentations of his walk – his own ‘long and winding road’, fraught with difficulty and dangers.
He constantly yearned for rescue from his tormentors, and justice against them, yet knew there was safety in the strong arms of his Redeemer.
Such is the walk of the Christian.
Just when we think we have nailed this earthly long and winding Christian road, we realise there is a way to go before we reach the door to perfection. We still have earthly bodies, with earthly temptations, and real enemies awaiting to destroy us at every turn. We cry to God in repentance for a release from this pain, and these tears. In His time, He delivers us. He washes us clean in the precious blood of His Son, and sets us back on the road, refreshed and ready to continue our journey.
One day this will all be behind us when He finally leads us to His door – the door to eternity in heaven with Him.
But until then, we have a long, long way to go.
Enjoy!
Lyrics (courtesy lyricsfreak.com):
The long and winding road
That leads to your door
Will never disappear
I’ve seen that road before
It always leads me here
Lead me to your door
The wild and windy night
That the rain washed away
Has left a pool of tears
Crying for the day
Why leave me standing here?
Let me know the way
Many times I’ve been alone
And many times I’ve cried
Anyway you’ll never know
The many ways I’ve tried
And still they lead me back
To the long winding road
You left me standing here
A long, long time ago
Don’t leave me waiting here
Lead me to your door
But still they lead me back
To the long winding road
You left me standing here
A long, long time ago
Don’t keep me waiting here
Lead me to your door
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
