No Hope In This World

A poem / song I wrote after reading the book of Ecclesiastes, and seeing the tragedy of trusting in the things of this world, and the false hope it offers.

I find solace through the Triune Godhead, who perfectly equip and strengthen me for my journey in this world, and give me hope and joy for the next.

Still a work in progress, so this might change next time you visit. I thought I would post anyway!

No Hope In This Lost World

Verse 1: The Father (Eccl 5:13-15, 8:12-13, Eph 1:3-6, Phil 4:11)

I have no hope from this lost world,

As an anchorage for my trust.

For it’s riches and it’s false allure,

Devoured by rot, and rust.

But my God, Immortal fortress,

In your strength I find true peace.

For I know when this gloss fades away,

Your love shall never cease.

Verse 2: The Spirit (Eccl 4:1-3, Eph 1:13-14)

I have no help from this lost world;

Fraught with dread, I fend on my own.

Finding none that I can call upon

To lead me safely home.

But your Holy Spirit guides me,

Like an ever faithful friend,

To the foot of my true Saviour’s cross,

And seals me, to the end.

Verse 3: The Son (Eccl 5:16-17, Eph 1:11-12)

I have no heav’n from this lost world,

Nor a guarantee past my death.

No assurance of a better life,

Beyond that final breath.

But my Christ, that cross so splintered,

There You took my hell-bound place!

Now I’m heaven-bound forevermore

But only through your grace.

BRIDGE: Lament (Eccl 2:18-26, Ezek 36:26-27, Eph 1:17-18)

Lord, turn to flesh my heart of stone,

And help me trust in You alone.

May all this beauty in my view,

Seem meaningless compared to You!

Without You, all my days are spent,

Left meaningless without content.

Affix my eyes upon Your Son,

Until my days on earth are done…

Verse 4: Victory (Eccl 12:1-5, Ps 121:1-5, Eph 1:7-10)

I will call to whom I am redeemed,

When my trust in this world is lost.

Place my faith upon His sacrifice,

And dwell upon the cost.

I may have no hope in this world,

Yet I know my heart is blessed:

For my only hope is Jesus Christ –

He is my final rest.

I may have no hope in this world

Yet I know my heart is blessed:

For my only hope is Jesus Christ –

He is my final rest.

Christ is my final rest.
